Silicon Carbide

Wiresawing

Our advanced micro grit technology and capabilities make Washington Mills a trusted and high capacity supplier of CARBOREX micro grits to the photovoltaic industry. CARBOREX precision sized silicon carbide powders are used as a loose abrasive for the slicing of silicon wafers. CARBOREX silicon carbide is exceptionally efficient in cutting very thin wafers – resulting in increased silicon yields, less kerf loss, and reduced costs.

Our CARBOREX silicon carbide micro grits are manufactured using high quality raw materials and state-of-the-art processing facilities. Washington Mills manufactures its own silicon carbide crude by heating silica sand and petroleum coke in electrical furnaces at high temperatures. Meticulous quality control over the manufacturing process of crude allows Washington Mills total process control of the raw material used to make CARBOREX micro grits. The CARBOREX micro grits are processed through the following steps: crushing, shaping, flotation, chemical treatment to remove impurities, drying, magnetic separation, dust removal, and sieving. The grits are further milled in jet-mills, before being classified by sieving, air classification, and/or sedimentation in water.

CARBOREX micro grits are carefully controlled for quality. They are measured for: chemistry, size distribution, surface area, bulk density, grain shape, abrasive efficiency and other relevant parameters to ensure the superior quality of the product.

Product Picture

Our high quality F 500 PV, F 600 PV and F 800 PV micro grits are manufactured to a specific grain shape which makes them effective in the wire sawing of silicon wafers for the photovoltaic industry. The grits are carefully classified with our unique process technology to meet the particle size distribution required for efficient wire sawing. In addition to chemical analyses and particle size, these grits are carefully manufactured according to strict specifications for their circularity and abrasive efficiency which are critical parameters for these applications.

Applications:

F 500 PV, F 600 PV and F 800 PV silicon carbide micro grits are used primarily for wiresawing silicon wafers where strict partcile size distribution is required for efficient wire sawing with minimal kerf loss.  Documents:
